Poetry Reading and Interviews Readings by Sarah Clancy, Simon Lewis and Michael J. Whelan followed by a interview and discussion moderated by Sarah.

Sarah Clancy

Sarah Clancy is a poet from Galway City although she now lives in Clare. She is the author of three collections of poetry, including The Truth and Other Stories (Salmon Poetry, 2014), Stacey and the Mechanical Bull (Lapwing Press, Belfast, 2011) and Thanks for Nothing, Hippies (Salmon Poetry, 2012). She has another collection due out soon if she ever gets her act together.  She has been placed or shortlisted in several of Ireland’s well known poetry competitions including and as a performance poetry Sarah has won the Cuirt International Festival of Literature Grand Slam Championship and was runner up in the All- Ireland Grand Slam Championships. In 2015 she was named The Bogman's Cannon People's Poet and in 2016 she was the Lingo Festival's Poet Laureate. Her work is widely anthologised and has been published in translation in Mexico, Slovenia, Poland, Italy and Spain as well as in the UK, Canada and the US in English. She has another collection due out this year if she ever gets her act together.

Michael J. Whelan

Michael J. Whelan is a historian and soldier-poet living in South Dublin, Ireland. He deployed as a United Nations Peacekeeper with the Irish Defence Forces to the conflicts in Lebanon and Kosovo in the 1990s. He holds a Masters Degree in Modern History from NUI Maynooth and is keeper of the Air Corps Military Museum and collector of oral history for the Military Archives of Ireland Oral History Programme. His poems are published Australia, Paris, Mexico, USA, UK, South Africa and Ireland and included in 'And Agamemnon Dead: An Anthology of Early Twenty First Century Irish Poetry, (Paris 2015) & 'The Hundred Years War: Modern War Poems' (Bloodaxe UK) 2014. He was selected for the Poetry Ireland Introductions series and was 2nd Place Winner of the Patrick Kavanagh & 3rd in the Jonathan Swift Awards. He has featured on T.V. and radio and at literary festivals and his debut collection 'Peacekeeper' was published in 2016 by Doire Press. He is currently working towards his second collection ‘Rules of Engagement’ to be published in 2019.

Simon Lewis

Simon Lewis' first collection, Jewtown, (Doire Press) was a finalist in the Shine/Strong Award in 2017. He was the winner of the Hennessy Emerging Poetry Prize and runner-up in the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in 2015. His second collection, Ah, Men! will be out in October 2019.
